One of the common errors in today’s workplace is this idea of leadership being a popularity contest. Leadership, in all honesty, is not a popularity contest.
Over the many years I’ve been delivering leadership training and through my own personal experience, I’ve talked to a lot of leaders. One of the things emerging leaders struggle with is grasping that leadership is not a popularity contest – they don’t want to upset people; they don’t want to make any difficult decisions because they don’t want to be unpopular. In my 20s and early 30s, this was something that I wrestled with and then you come to the realisation that leadership is not always going to be a popularity contest.
One of the things that goes with being a leader is that difficult decisions must be made, and have those difficult conversations are all part of the job. It goes with the territory and somebody said
to me once – leadership’s not a popularity contest.
If you want to be popular, it was a walk around with a cute puppy and give everyone candy floss all the time.
